From SEO to GEO: Why Your Customers Are Asking AI, Not Googling
Search didn't die — it changed shape. Here's why ranking #1 no longer guarantees you're seen, and the concrete shift from winning the click to being the source AI cites.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand the source AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google's AI Overviews — trust enough to cite, so when someone asks the machine a buying question, your name is in the answer. For most of the last twenty years, digital visibility had one definition: rank on Google, win the click. I built a decade of work on that premise. It still matters — but it's no longer the whole game, and the brands that notice first will own the next one.
Your customers are still searching. They're just increasingly doing it inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's own AI Overviews. Those engines don't hand back ten links for you to choose from. They read the sources and hand back one answer — and a short list of who they trusted enough to cite.
The click is no longer the finish line
In classic search, being visible meant being on page one. The buyer scanned the results, clicked, and decided on your site. In generative search the engine does the scanning, reading, and deciding — then writes the verdict. If your brand isn't in that verdict, named and described accurately, you're invisible. It doesn't matter how well the underlying page ranks if the model never surfaces it.
That's the gap GEO closes. Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your brand the source these models trust enough to cite — so when someone asks the machine a buying question, your name is in the answer. If the term is new to you, I keep a plain-language explainer on the Answers page.
SEO earns the ranking. GEO earns the recommendation.
People ask me if GEO replaces SEO. It doesn't. They optimize different moments, and a serious brand needs both working together:
- SEO asks: does this page deserve to rank for this query?
- GEO asks: is this brand a trustworthy entity a model should name in its answer?
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list of results | Be named inside the AI answer |
| Surface | Search results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews |
| Unit of winning | The click | The citation / recommendation |
| Core levers | Technical health, content, links | Entity clarity, citable content, authority signals |
| How it's measured | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Presence and accuracy inside AI answers |
SEO is the durable foundation — technical health, content, and authority that compound. GEO is the layer on top that turns that authority into citations inside AI answers. Skip the foundation and the AI has nothing solid to cite. Skip the GEO layer and all that authority stays trapped on page one, where fewer people are looking every quarter. Google's own AI optimization guide says it plainly: optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO — its AI features only surface pages that are indexed and eligible in regular Search.
What actually moves the needle
The mechanics aren't mysterious. Generative engines reward the same things a careful human researcher would — they just do it at scale:
- Entity clarity — the engine can tell exactly who you are, what you do, and how you relate to other known entities. Structured data (Person and Organization schema), a clear About page, and consistent names across the web are what build it.
- Citable content — clear, specific, well-structured answers to the real questions your buyers ask, written so a model can lift a sentence verbatim and be correct. Marketing fog doesn't get cited; plain answers do.
- Authority signals — consistent mentions, references, and links from places that matter to your field. Independent corroboration is what turns a claim into something a model will repeat.
None of that is a trick. It's the same substance that made brands trustworthy before AI — now made legible to the machines doing the answering. It's exactly the work I do for clients, from entity and content strategy to the systems underneath.
Yesterday: rank #1 and win the click. Today: be the brand AI cites and win the recommendation — before the click even exists.
The brands that win the next decade won't be the ones with the most keywords. They'll be the ones AI trusts enough to recommend. If that's the position you want, the first move is simply to see where you stand today — then close the distance deliberately. The next piece in this series, the practical GEO starter guide, walks the exact first moves.
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the practice of making a brand visible and citable inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — rather than only ranking in traditional search results. It works through clear entity data, genuinely citable content, and real authority signals.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. SEO earns your ranking and the durable authority AI reads to understand you; GEO turns that authority into citations inside AI answers. The brands that win the AI era invest in both at once — the recommendation and the ranking underneath it.
How do I know if AI already recommends my brand?
Ask the engines the questions your buyers ask and read the answers like a prospect would: are you named, is the description accurate, and are the cited sources yours? You can run this in about ten minutes with the free brand check at /brand-check.
How long does GEO take to work?
It compounds rather than switching on. As your entity clarity, citable content, and authority signals become consistent, engines lean on you more often. The foundational work shows up over weeks to a few months, then keeps building.
