How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT
When a buyer asks ChatGPT who to hire or what to buy, it answers with names. Here's what actually decides whose names come up — and the work that puts yours among them.
Every day, buyers ask ChatGPT questions that used to be Google searches: who's the best option in this category, which supplier can I trust, who can fix this problem for me. ChatGPT answers with a handful of names and a confident explanation. Either your business is one of those names, or — in that buying moment — you don't exist. This piece is about what decides the shortlist, and how to get on it honestly.
Where ChatGPT's recommendations come from
There's no secret index of approved brands. When someone asks a buying question, two layers produce the answer. The first is model memory — everything the model absorbed about your category and the entities in it during training. The second is live search: for current questions, ChatGPT searches the web and reads a handful of pages before answering, and its search has historically leaned on Bing's index — which is why being properly indexed and described there matters more than most SEO checklists admit.
You can't inject yourself into either layer directly. What you can do is shape what both layers find: a brand described the same way everywhere, content a model can quote without hedging, and independent sources confirming you are what you say you are. That's the whole game, and it breaks into four moves.
Step 1 — Make yourself unmistakable
Before an engine recommends you, it has to be certain it knows who you are. That's entity work: Person and Organization schema on your site, an About page that states plainly what you do and for whom, and one canonical description reused everywhere — your site, LinkedIn, directories, partner pages. If the model finds three conflicting versions of you, it trusts none of them. The markup half of this has its own guide: Schema Markup for GEO.
Step 2 — Publish the answers buyers are asking for
List the ten questions your buyers actually ask before choosing someone in your category — cost questions, comparison questions, how-do-I questions. Then publish a page or section that answers each one directly, in the first lines, in language specific enough to quote. Generative engines assemble answers from sources that answer. Brochures don't qualify.
- Lead with the answer; explain after.
- Prefer verifiable specifics — what you do, for whom, where, since when — over superlatives no model can check.
- Add a visible FAQ and mirror it in FAQPage schema, so the questions are machine-legible too.
Step 3 — Get corroborated
A model won't repeat a claim only you make. Recommendation-grade trust comes from independent agreement: professional directories, industry press, partner and client pages, a LinkedIn presence that matches your site word for word. Every consistent external description is a vote that you're real, established, and exactly what you claim to be.
Step 4 — Stay readable by machines
None of it works if the crawlers can't read you. Welcome the AI crawlers explicitly in robots.txt — GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are OpenAI's — keep the site fast and server-rendered, and publish an llms.txt file: a plain-text index of who you are and what's worth reading. This site goes one further and publishes llms-full.txt, the complete text of every page in one machine-readable document. It's a pattern worth copying.
What to expect, honestly
Search-backed answers can change within weeks of the sources changing — fix your entity and publish real answers, and you can start appearing in browsing-backed responses fairly quickly. Model memory moves slower, updating when models retrain. GEO compounds: every month of consistency makes you easier to recommend, and a head start is genuinely hard for competitors to claw back.
ChatGPT doesn't recommend the loudest brand in the category. It recommends the clearest one it can verify.
The honest starting point is knowing where you stand: ask the engines your own buying questions tonight and read what comes back. The free brand check scores that in ten minutes and tells you which gap to close first. And if you'd rather have the whole system designed and built for you, that's the work I do.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
No. There's no placement you can buy inside the organic answer. Ad products may appear around AI experiences, but the recommendation itself is assembled from what the model knows and reads — which is why the durable strategy is being genuinely identifiable, citable, and corroborated.
Does my website still matter if buyers never click through?
More than ever — just differently. Your site is the primary source engines read to understand and quote you. Even when the click never happens, the site is what makes the recommendation possible: it's your entity record, not just your storefront.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors and not me?
Usually one of three gaps: the model can't resolve who you are (entity), you've published nothing it can quote (content), or nobody independent confirms you (corroboration). The fix starts with knowing which gap is yours — exactly what an AI visibility audit isolates.
Do the same steps work for Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews?
Yes. The engines weight sources differently — Perplexity is citation-heavy, AI Overviews lean on Google's index — but all of them reward the same fundamentals: clear identity, quotable answers, and independent corroboration. Build it once and you're recommendable everywhere.
